Magnet Sophomore Earns Gold at Local Music Competition

In front of a packed house of family, friends, and admirers at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vancouver on January 15th, Magnet sophomore Ashley Teng earned a Gold Medal for her flute performance of Flute Concerto 1st mov., by Carl Nielsen. She was matched up against eight of the area’s brightest young musical stars who performed for $1000 scholarship awards and the opportunity to perform as guest artists with The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) at its 23rd Annual Young Artists Competition on April 22 & 23 concerts at Skyview Concert Hall. To qualify, dozens of area musicians under the age of 18 submitted audition recordings to the VSO and were judged by a blue ribbon panel of professional musicians. Congratulations, Ashley!  We look forward to your upcoming performance with the VSO and Maestro Salvador Brotons. Cheers!vsobannerashley

College Admissions Notifications (What to do?)

Mrs. Liebe, our esteemed counselor, passes on some vital info in this season of college admissions:

“Happy New Year greetings to you! I hope this email finds you healthy and well.

College admission decision letters are rolling in on a steady basis for many students. This is both a highly anticipated and nerve-wrecking time for students and families. Often we have a clear understanding of letters that offer acceptance and rejections, yet offers of deferral and wait-listing can be confusing to understand.

Receiving an offer of deferral or wait-listing is not necessarily a sign of rejection, it often comes with notification that the applicant will be reviewed at least once more. Please know that should you receive a letter of deferral or wait-listing, and this is a school at the top of the student’s list, I recommend the student take quick action by contacting the school to express continued interest. I have enclosed a link to an article that offers additional suggestions on how to handle this process.”

MST Alumna Anna Roche Published!

Congratulations to CHS/MST Alumna Anna Roche (’16) for her co-author credit on a recently published study (Dec. ’16) in the Journal of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (JARO). Roche worked on this study at WSU Vancouver in Dr. Allison Coffin’s lab, throughout high school, as part of her internship work in the MST Magnet program. Well done, Anna!

MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute

The Camas MST program is a member of the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools. Through our membership in this program, you have the opportunity to take online coursework, as well as possibly get involved in their summer institute. Check it out:

“We are excited to announce that NCSSS and MIT, with its unique engineering summer camp Beaver Works, will expand our partnership in 2017. This unique member benefit is a great experience for NCSSS member school students.  During the summer of 2016, 22 Consortium member school students attended a four-week residential STEM program at MIT. Students gained valuable experience programming and racing an autonomous mini car.

Check out this video on the program: Summer Institute

Program offerings have been expanded for 2017. MIT is offering online courses that prepare students to program their own autonomous car, autonomous air vehicle or to build their own cognitive assistant. These online courses are FREE of charge and open to all staff and students at any of the NCSSS member schools. See the 2017 brochure.

Students who are successful in the online courses will be invited to apply for an invitation to MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute. Twenty students from NCSSS member schools will receive a full scholarship to attend the four-week program July 10-Aug. 4. Schools may also send teams to the capstone competition Aug. 5-6.

Registration for the online courses will begin soon. The first online course begins Monday, Dec. 19, with rolling enrollment. Students may join the first online course through January. Check out the full program brochure. If you have any questions, please email bwsi2017-info@mit.edu.”

Geometry in Action!

Geometry students gave their first group presentations of the year in math class a couple of weeks ago.  They took twenty pictures of examples of our geometry vocabulary in the world around them and then shared these pictures with the class.  They did a great job.  It’s fun to see the geometry that is all around us and to see what types of things catch other people’s eyes.IMG_0855
