College Admissions and the “GPA Game”

Sophomore Magnet English students had a wonderful visit today from our esteemed Magnet counselor Mrs. Liebe. She walked us through an activity called “The GPA Game”, where students assume an identity and move up and down the ladder of admissions based on their fictional profile’s characteristics: GPA, extracurricular involvement, family connections, work history, etc. It came through loud and clear for the students that getting into college is no longer as simple as getting a great GPA. Here’s how she describes this activity:

“It is easy to assume that grades alone are the factor that determine college admission. While grades are very important they are not the sole determiner. For a moment think of college admissions as an entire pie that is divided into multiple “slices.” These “slices” include grades, SAT/ACT scores, teacher and counselor recommendations, extra-curricular activities, rigor of courses taken, geography, and more. Students playing the GPA game experience firsthand how the holistic and subjective admission process works while gaining an understanding of the impacts character, integrity, social media and work ethic have when accessing post high school options.”

We finished the visit with a short video clip that gives an inside look at the admissions process. The video is well worth the time … check it out: Inside the College Admissions Process 20170202_104521

MST Junior Alaya Mays wins CHS POL!

Performing in front of a packed house in room 116, Magnet junior Alaya Mays wowed the judges with her soulful interpretation of More Lies, by Karin Gottshall, winning the 2017 CHS Poetry Out Loud (POL) competition. In order to advance to the school competition, she and the other students first had to qualify in their respective English class competitions. By virtue of winning the school competition, Ms. Mays advances to the regional competition, being held this year at 5:00 PM on February 2nd at the ESD 112 in Vancouver, WA. Congratulations, Alaya, as well as all the other contestants and the eight school competition finalists! FYI: This year’s runner up was Sam DePonceau. Congrats, Sam, on your awesome interpretation of Billy Collins’ Fishing on the Susquehanna in July.

On a historical note, this marks the 10th anniversary of CHS involvement in this national recitation/interpretation contest. We estimate that approximately 400 CHS students have participated in the school competition, not to mention close to 2000+ students in the various classroom competitions held over the last ten years. Long live the spoken word!

MST 9 Multigenre Projects for The Alchemist

“Creativity and Complexity” sums up our work on The Alchemist Multigenre Projects. Students worked in groups to collaborate and create written and visual pieces to show their depth of understanding about the novel. They created these genres around themes like: following a personal legend, the unity of nature, and the danger of fear. Nice work, MST Pre-AP English 9!

CHS Girls in STEM

On Saturday, January 21st, 2017, CHS and the Magnet program hosted the Camas Girls in STEM Conference for middle school girls. We had over 45 female professionals in the STEM field who helped to make this event happen, along with 31 of our high school girls who devoted their Saturday to encourage young women to consider a career in a STEM field. It was a hoot of a day being inspired and challenged. By the way, the photo of Mrs. Newman holding the brains? Yes, those are human brains…eek!

In front of a packed house of family, friends, and admirers at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vancouver on January 15th, Magnet sophomore Ashley Teng earned a Gold Medal for her flute performance of Flute Concerto 1st mov., by Carl Nielsen. She was matched up against eight of the area’s brightest young musical stars who performed for $1000 scholarship awards and the opportunity to perform as guest artists with The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) at its 23rd Annual Young Artists Competition on April 22 & 23 concerts at Skyview Concert Hall. To qualify, dozens of area musicians under the age of 18 submitted audition recordings to the VSO and were judged by a blue ribbon panel of professional musicians. College Admissions Notifications (What to do?)

Mrs. Liebe, our esteemed counselor, passes on some vital info in this season of college admissions:

“Happy New Year greetings to you! I hope this email finds you healthy and well.

College admission decision letters are rolling in on a steady basis for many students. This is both a highly anticipated and nerve-wrecking time for students and families. Often we have a clear understanding of letters that offer acceptance and rejections, yet offers of deferral and wait-listing can be confusing to understand.

Receiving an offer of deferral or wait-listing is not necessarily a sign of rejection, it often comes with notification that the applicant will be reviewed at least once more. Please know that should you receive a letter of deferral or wait-listing, and this is a school at the top of the student’s list, I recommend the student take quick action by contacting the school to express continued interest. I have enclosed a link to an article that offers additional suggestions on how to handle this process.”
