Senior Alaya Mays Statebound in POL!

Camas High School recently held its school contest for Poetry Out Loud during finals week.  Some 40 students from the individual classroom competitions met that morning to recite poems they had selected and interpreted. Eight of those 40 advanced to the finals, and three of those eight were MST Magnet students. Sophomores Chloe Higgins, Thomas Hull, and senior Alaya Mays all performed admirably in the final round, but Alaya Mays came out on top, winning the school competition for the third year in a row!

Alaya competed in the regional round at ESD 112 the next week and took top honors, winning a trip to the state competition. Congratulations, Alaya! We wish you the best of luck in the upcoming state competition. Read all about her journey in this recent Camasonian article: Poetry Out Loud Statebound Champion

Senior Symposium 2017

On December 11th, 2017, the entire Magnet senior class presented their summer internship work and projects to the Camas School District school board and community at the Zellerbach Administration Center. After the poster fair, staff, students, and community convened for the regular school board meeting to hear formal presentations of internships by seniors Ashley Miles and Gabe Mukobi.

Ms. Miles conducted her internship over the summer at Portland State University. In her words, “Global climate change is widely accepted among the scientific community, yet society has not made the necessary reductions in fossil fuel usage. Models for the implications of climate change are crucial for convincing the public of the need for increased environmental protection. Due to their importance in freshwater ecosystems and measurable stress responses with the p53 stress protein, Nile tilapia serve as a good model for the effects of climate change. The goal of this experiment was to determine specificity in the p53 antibody, and allow  for further research on p53 responses to exposure to environmental stress in Nile tilapia. We used the Western Blot protocol to verify antibody specificity to the p53 protein in tilapia tissue samples. Our results did not provide complete verification of specificity of the p53 antibody, but suggested potential for future verification of specificity.” The Impact of Environmental Stressors on the Production of Stress Protein P53 in Nile Tilapia

Mr. Mukobi worked on a team to develop the hardware and software for a newly designed localized positioning system called Pozyx that communicates over the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio spectrum. Prototyped by a team in Ghent, Belgium, Pozyx devices are equipped with UWB positioning capabilities as well as a variety of motion sensors onboard, including accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers. These sensors allow for the collecting of various useful motion data on a moving device while concurrently collecting data on its position. The utilization of the UWB spectrum for communication by Pozyx enables it to achieve high data rates of up to 100 Hz, positioning accuracy within 10 centimeters, and at a relatively small cost and setup (Pozyx, 2017). He and his team successfully implemented and tested this Pozyx positioning system with applications as a learning tool for hands-on college-level physics courses, as an advanced position and motion data collection device for professional athletes, and as a solution for other high precision localized positioning applications. Implementing a High Precision Ultra-Wideband Positioning System for Kinematic Education

Congratulations, seniors, on your successful internships and projects!

Magnet Sophomore Jaden Kim Honored by Local VFW Post

Magnet sophomore Jaden Kim debated the effort to reward ratio when he considered the extra credit writing assignment Mr. Greene offered in early November via the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) essay contest.  In the end, Mr. Kim decided it was worth it. Little did he know when he submitted his essay that (besides getting the opportunity to reflect deeply on the role of our veterans past and future) his efforts would also earn him a $250 dollar honorarium for his 3rd place essay based on the following prompt: “American History: Our Hope for the Future”.  Based on his placing in this contest, he now advances to the district level of competition. A special thanks to all of the VFW members at post 4278 for this opportunity. And thank you for your service.

MST Students Visit with Astronaut/CHS Grad Barratt

On Thursday, November 16th, about 50 CHS/MST students had the opportunity to hear astronaut and CHS class of 77 grad Dr. Michael Barratt speak to regional MST students at an event hosted by Washington State University Vancouver. Barratt wowed the audience with insights about the path he took to get, quite literally, into space!

Here are some of the paraphrased quotes gleaned from Dr. Barratt’s talk:

  • Hard work is more important than being a genius…out of nearly 50 astronauts he was referring to, he called two of them geniuses…the rest are hard-working folks who love to learn and are adaptable to adverse and varying environments.
  • The international teamwork that started in the early 90’s and has continued to present day in space…it’s very cool.
  • Some students ask, “When/where will I ever use this?”, but he says that’s the wrong question.  He encouraged students to learn as much as they possibly can and then ask/answer, “How can I use this?”
  • Follow your interests…don’t focus on a certain destination.

Thank you for inspiring us, Dr. Barratt. Roll ‘Makers!

MST APES Explore “Fact or Fiction”

Mrs. Dean’s freshmen AP Environmental Science (APES) students recently participated in an activity called fact or fiction. They used evidence and reasoning to support or reject claims on the topics of evolution, biodiversity, and other environmental occurrences. Nice work, MST APES!
