Our application is live, but we recommend students learn about the program by visiting the MST Admissions Portal and attending our info night webinar before rushing to submit an application. About once per semester, MST parents band together to provide lunch for the MST staff and students to help build community between grade levels while sharing a meal. All evidence suggests that this last Wednesday’s lunch was a rousing success. Thank you to the MST parents who helped to organize, provided food, and cleaned. Much appreciated!

Due to various factors, we are having to reschedule our webinar parent/student info night to later next month, exact date and time TBD. We will also be pushing back the dates for testing and teacher submission of recommendations to accommodate the new date for the informational webinar. We’d like to invite current 8th grade parents, guardians, and students to an informational Zoom webinar about the Camas High School MST Magnet program that’s scheduled for Wednesday, February 21st, from 6:30 – 7:30 pm: https://camas-wednet-edu.zoom.us/s/86984152506
During the meeting, you’ll hear from MST students and staff about the application process and the unique characteristics of our program and its students. You will also have the option of asking questions in real time via the chat that will be answered by MST staff as they are asked.

Congrats to MST Senior Ayla Crowell who was recently named as a recipient of a prestigious scholarship award. Cooke College Scholars are selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, service to others, and leadership. Students must be current high school seniors residing in the United States. Scholarships are awarded without respect to religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship status, geographic region, race or ethnicity. The Cooke College Scholarship provides Scholars with the opportunity to graduate with as little debt as possible. The award, which is last dollar funding after all institutional aid, can provide as much as $55,000 per year to pursue a bachelor’s degree at any accredited undergraduate institution. Each December our freshmen and sophomore students present their 1st semester project study progress to a panel of staff and program graduates. It’s one of the highlights of our year, as graduates returning home from college, grad school, work, get to spend time with family and friends and also reconnect with our program and help give feedback. After formal presentations from the students, our grads participate in a panel where they share their post-high school experience with us. This is one of the three panels that took place in our three presentation rooms. On December 11th, 2023, the Magnet senior class presented their summer internship work and projects to the Camas School District school board and community at the Zellerbach Administration Center. After the poster fair, staff, students, and community convened for the regular school board meeting to hear formal presentations of internships by seniors Shiven Friedeman and Madi Williams.
Mr. Friedeman collaborated with Dr. Guo in California to observe technological trends in medicine and collect data on their efficacy. His abstract goes into further detail on this process: “The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness and longevity of … new forms of technology in patients following operation. The sample group with which data was derived all had PAD or CKD, surgical treatment involving the use of new technology within the last 12 months, and two ultrasounds surrounding the time of surgery. Based on a paired t-test, we fail to reject the null hypothesis, supporting the notion that these technologies have a prolonged effect on the body; however, there is not enough information to reasonably conclude that these technologies are more efficient. In order to answer the guiding question, more data over a greater period of time is required.” Poster: Impact of Modern Vascular Technology on Patient Health
Ms. Williams conducted an internship at the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center within the anatomic pathology department working with Dr. Singh and Dr. Allen. Here’s a synopsis of her work: “The purpose of my research was to determine if the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center needed to refine its practice of formalin use within the anatomic pathology department. Currently, if a sample is removed from the patient in the operating room over the weekend, it will be placed in the fridge in the gross room until the lab techs can place it on formalin on Monday. Because this allows the sample multiple days to begin autolysis, the pathologists were interested to see how often this degradation period would actually affect their ability to get a diagnosis from the sample. This information could then be used to determine if the practice in the gross room at the hospital needs to be changed in order to improve patient care …” Poster: The Effects of Delay with Formalin Use in Pathology

Congrats to 2019 CHS/MST alumna Rachel Blair on the recent publication of her thesis research on military justice in Chile. In her words: “I am excited to share that my paper on military justice in Chile has been published! Thank you to the Mary Gates Endowment for supporting this research, my wonderful thesis advisor Angelina Godoy and the JSJIS team for their collaboration and insight during this process.”

The Camas High School MST Magnet program (45 students and 5 staff) took a field trip this past weekend to Ashland, Oregon, the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, to see productions of Romeo and Juliet and Rent, as well as participating in a workshop on Saturday morning with OSF staff. The trip was a rousing success, representing our triumphant return to this beloved field trip that last happened in 2019! A special thanks to the students, staff, and parents who worked together to make this yet another memorable trip. We are already counting the days till the 2025 trip!
