Magnet Blazers Night Scheduled
The CHS MST Magnet is heading over to Portland on Wednesday, 03/11, to watch the Blazers take on Houston. We have a block of 30 seats. The fee is $32, which covers the cost of the ticket and our transportation to and from. We’d leave CHS about 4:45 and return that evening to CHS between 10:30 – 10:45.
The CHS ASB office will begin accepting payment for the outing on Tuesday, 02/03. Cash or checks payable to CHS. Sales finalize by 02/13 or whenever tickets run out. Depending on interest, we could possibly add more, up to 50 total. Violin Concert to Feature Magnet Senior Teng
Magnet Senior “Yun Teng, 17, will play as a guest soloist in the Willamette Falls Symphony’s concert Sunday in Oregon City, Ore. He will play his 350-year-old violin with the Oregon City-based orchestra during the performance of Jean Sibelius’ “Violin Concerto.” Teng has played with the Portland Youth String Ensemble and the Portland Youth Philharmonic. The Willamette Falls Symphony is a nonprofit community orchestra sponsored in part by Oregon City Community Schools. The concert is 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oregon City United Methodist Church, 18955 S. End Road, Oregon City. Tickets will be available at the door for $12 for adults, and $10 for students and seniors. Admission is free for children younger than 12.” Columbian

CHS Math Club American Math Competition
The CHS Math club will be hosting the American Math Competition test/s for this year. The tests given will be the AMC 10a on February 3, the AMC 10b on February 25 and the AMC 12b on February 25. Both AMC 10 tests are of same difficulty and the AMC 12 is harder. Freshmen and sophomores can take the AMC 10 and 12 level tests while juniors and seniors can only take the AMC 12. The students won’t have to pay for the tests and anyone from any math class can join as the tests focus mainly on problem solving skills rather than raw knowledge. There is no penalty for doing poorly on the tests and if someone does well, they can use this as a resume builder. People who excel have the chance of being invited to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination later in the year. Mr. Pathak Goes to Washington
Magnet Senior Reesab Pathak was named yesterday as a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search 2015. Mr. Pathak conducted an internship over the last year and a half at OHSU where he worked on a research team to better understand HIV. His work there, including a recent co-author credit in a study published in the December 2014 Journal of Immunology: Universal, MHC-E restricted killer T cell responses: Identification of a novel immune response against HIV , was the basis for his selection as a finalist. Congratulations, Reese!

“On January 21, 40 high school seniors were named finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search 2015, a program of Society for Science & the Public. These finalists were chosen from the select pool of 300 high school seniors named semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search 2015 on January 7.”

Magnet Knowledge Bowlers Continue Streak
The Camas High School Knowledge Bowl team is blessed with an abundance of talent. Of particular merit this season, however, has been one of our Junior Varsity teams that is currently ranked 1st out of 42 JV teams in the Region. JV#4, comprised of Magnet sophomores and one Magnet freshmen, posted the highest score of any team, JV or Varsity, an impressive 101, at the Wednesday, January 13th meet at Union High School. MST Magnet Now Accepting Applications
Incoming 9th grade students from the area visited CHS on Tuesday, January 13th, to learn more about the CHS MST Magnet Program. Students heard from staff, administrators, and students as they rotated through several stations to learn more about MST research and project study, as well as the admissions process. The visitation was followed up with a parent meeting on 01/15/15. Online applications are being accepted now through Friday, 01/23/15 @ 3:00 PM. Magnet Senior Sheth Published in Journal
Magnet Senior Meghal Sheth’s internship work over the last year or so took her to WSU Vancouver where she worked in partnership with Dr. Allison Coffin to better understand the effects of toxins in the environment by studying zebrafish. Through this work, Ms. Sheth has received her first co-author credit via the publication of their work in the Journal of NeuroToxicology, which “specializes in publishing the best peer-reviewed original research papers dealing with the effects of toxic substances on the nervous system of humans and experimental animals of all ages…” Congratulations, Meghal! See below for a brief snippet from the study’s abstract:
“Environmental toxicants such as bisphenol-A (BPA) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are prevalent in our water supply, soil, and many food products and can profoundly affect the central nervous system. Both BPA and PCBs can disrupt endocrine signaling, which is important for auditory development and function, but the effect of these toxicants on the auditory periphery is not understood. In this study we investigated the effect of PCB-95 and BPA on lateral line development, function, and regeneration in larval zebrafish.”

Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalist
Senior Magnet student Reesab Pathak was recently selected as an Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalist. Over 4,000 people applied, but only 300 students were chosen as semifinalists.
The top 40 of the 300 semifinalists receive trips to Washington DC, where they meet President Obama and also are judged on poster and oral presentations to judges/notable scientists in their fields. He’ll know if he’s made it to that stage of the competition later this month.

This is a quick reminder that the deadline for Student Film Festival entries is February 4! The Student Film Festival is a video contest created just for K-12 students. Finalists will have their short films shown at the Liberty Theatre. Finalist videos may also be featured on the District website, YouTube channel, and social media pages.
