I received a letter indicating that admission reps from Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn and Stanford are going to be in Portland in a couple of weeks. Here is what you need to know:

The event is free to attend, but you are required to pre-register. If you do go, please dress appropriately– clean slacks/skirts/dress and clean shirt- no advertisement on clothing, short skirts or low cut tops- you are not there to advertise for Abercrombie and Fitch or Victoria’s Secret, but rather, to make a professional and positive impression. Leave the flip-flops at home too, and if you can imagine doing so, leave your cell phone at home too. If that’s too painful, then power it off before walking into the meeting. I know you can do it!!!
I encourage you to introduce yourself to the reps and gather any literature they have to offer. Want to knock their socks off? Follow up with a handwritten thank you card and be sure to include what attracts you to their perspective school and how their campus can help you fulfill future career goals. The impact of the handwritten note truly did not die with the dinosaurs; it only seems like it. If you have illegible handwriting, then print carefully.
