Study abroad? Learn a language? Free, you say?

Here are a couple of scholarship/study opportunities that you might find intriguing … In retrospect, by the way, I personally wish I would have done something like this (as scary as it would have been to leave the comforts of home) when I was in high school and/or college. I did travel and live abroad after school, but I had to pay for it!

  1. National Security Language Initiative for Youth: application due next Thursday, Oct. 29th, by 11:00 am. 600 scholarships for next summer or for next school year will be awarded for high school students with a 2.5 + GPA, between 15 to 18 years of age and U.S. citizens to live in a foreign country and learn one of the following languages: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajik), Russian or Turkish. Round trip flight, academic school costs, room and board and health insurance are paid for. See Mrs. Keene for application information.
  2. Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program (YES): application due December 1, 2015. 900 scholarships available for next school year to live with host families and study in Bosnia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, the Philippines, Senegal, Thailand or Turkey. Scholarship pays for round trip airfare, tuition, educational and cultural activities, visa fees, room and board and medical. Must be 15 to 18 years old, a U. S. Citizen, and enrolled in high school. See Mrs. Keene for more information.

Camas Educational Foundation (CEF) Phone-a-thon 2015

Dear Magnetos,

‘Tis the season for the annual Camas Educational Foundation (CEF) Phone-a-thon.  They are asking once again for our help.  The job is simple: show up at the District offices (ZAC) and call CSD friendly folk to ask them about making donations to support grants that are awarded to teachers and programs (like the MST Magnet) within the CSD.

Would you be willing to help with the Phone-a-thon this year to show support for the MST Magnet and the CSD?

  • The dates are November 3-5 (Tues-Thurs) from 6pm-9pm each evening.
  • You don’t have to commit to every night; a single night is fine.
  • If you can only do a partial time slot, that’s fine too.
  • And don’t forget that there’s food, prizes, for the helpers!

If you think this might be a good fit for you, email me the date(s) that work for you and put it on your calendar.

This activity, by the way, is great supporting evidence in the Community Involvement category for the twice per semester self-evaluation you do for the Magnet: http://mistergweb.com/rubricmagnet.pdf

Cheers!

All’s Well That Ends Well: Ashland Recap

Well, Ashland 2015 is in the can, so to speak. We returned to CHS about 6:15 PM Saturday after a whirlwind, 36 hour journey to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We packed in two plays (Guys and Dolls, Much Ado about Nothing), a prologue, an interactive discussion with actors from Guys and Dolls, and we even managed to hit the newly minted In-N-Out in Medford. A special thanks to the chaperones, students, and staff who worked together to make this yet another memorable trip.

Final Reminders/Tips for Ashland

Good Morning, Ashland Crew!

We are less than 24 hours away from our departure.  I’ve recently updated the itinerary to reflect a little earlier of a departure time from Ashland on Saturday morning. The most recent/final version is here: http://goo.gl/dgxoer.  Also, we still have a need for donations of breakfast/snack items for the trip.  If you’d like to chip in, sign up here:  https://goo.gl/drKbMi

Important Reminders:

  • We load at 5:15 AM; we roll out of CHS at 5:30. Quite literally, if you snooze, you lose!
  • Bring a sleeping bag and towels as needed (possibly an extra pillow)
  • Pack light; we have limited room on the bus.
  • Wear good walking shoes for the 20 minute walks back and forth to Ashland Commons.
  • Have money on hand for the 3-4 meals we’ll eat out.
  • Make a plan ahead of time for pick up at CHS on Saturday (return time approximately 5-6 PM)
  • If you’d like reminders during the trip via email and/or text that I’ll push out, don’t forget to sign up for the Remind service for Ashland here:  https://goo.gl/tQ6VWi

What say’st thou?  Art thou pumped for a great trip?!?!
