MST Senior Awarded UW Presidential Scholarship!

Senior Tenzin Kelsang was recently awarded the University of Washington’s Presidential Scholarship. Approximately 12-15 incoming freshman receive this scholarship each year, which provides a $10,000 scholarship renewable for all four years of undergrad.

Tenzin says that receiving this scholarship means a lot to him. His Tibetan identity has always been a central part of his life, and his essay was written on Tibetan outreach and the work he has done to support his community.

Through Students for a Free Tibet, he protested Tibetan uprising day on March 10th. He also volunteered at the Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association, where he taught kids how to write and speak Tibetan and how to play the dranyen, a traditional Tibetan instrument.

“My mom was born in India, my dad moved from Tibet when he was six,” Tenzin explains. “They went to school in India, and came to the United States in 2000.”

Tenzin hopes to honor their legacy through his work. “I wanted to help shed light on their struggles,” he says.

Congratulations, Tenzin! We are excited to see what you will accomplish next.
