MST Students Shine at 2023 SWWA SEF!

MST students presented their research online at the Southwest Washington Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 4, bringing home numerous awards. Freshmen Zaina Abu Hweij, Mithil Krishnan, and Shangqiu Li presented their research on designing a more efficient bird detection algorithm for crop protection, placing first in category and winning awards from National Geographic, US Agency for International Development, and the United States Air Force. Freshmen Akhila Pattamatta and Sophie Zhang researched the impact of salt on our ecosystem and the best methods for mitigating it, earning second place in category and awards from the Association for Women Geosciences, the Environmental Protection Agency, the US Metric Association, and the US Stockholm Junior Water prize. Sophomores Hyacinth Cook and Yuna Lee won second place in category for their research on the effects of fire retardants on abiotic factors in the ecosystem. They also won awards from the Environmental Protection Agency and the US Stockholm Junior Water prize. Sophomores Alexandria McNutt and Jenny Wang won first place in category for their researching into the viability of the Tesla turbine for generating electricity and were selected to represent our region (all expenses paid for by SEF) at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas, Texas, in May. They also won awards from the Environmental Protection Agency, Ricoh, USA, Inc., and the United States Air Force. Full overview of all awards here: Camas SEF Awards
