MST Junior Alaya Mays wins CHS POL!

Performing in front of a packed house in room 116, Magnet junior Alaya Mays wowed the judges with her soulful interpretation of More Lies, by Karin Gottshall, winning the 2017 CHS Poetry Out Loud (POL) competition. In order to advance to the school competition, she and the other students first had to qualify in their respective English class competitions. By virtue of winning the school competition, Ms. Mays advances to the regional competition, being held this year at 5:00 PM on February 2nd at the ESD 112 in Vancouver, WA. Congratulations, Alaya, as well as all the other contestants and the eight school competition finalists! FYI: This year’s runner up was Sam DePonceau. Congrats, Sam, on your awesome interpretation of Billy Collins’ Fishing on the Susquehanna in July.

On a historical note, this marks the 10th anniversary of CHS involvement in this national recitation/interpretation contest. We estimate that approximately 400 CHS students have participated in the school competition, not to mention close to 2000+ students in the various classroom competitions held over the last ten years. Long live the spoken word!
